Careless Cuisine
I attempted to cook Toad in the Hole this evening following Chris’ instructions that he had emailed me previously.
YORKSHIRE PUDDING
4 heaped table spoons plain flour
1 egg
1/2 pint milk (substitute about 1/16 with water)
saltsieve flour + salt into mixing bowl
make a well in the middle
add milk
mix in slowly trying to avoid any lumps
when done, add water and whisk hard for 10 minutes. make sure u make it airy.
put it in the fridge
heat some oil in the tray at bout 180 and brown the sausages
when the oil is hot hot hot put in sausages then pour in chilled batter.
can’t remember if u cook it for 20 or 40 mins, so use ur judgement!
none of it should b too mushy!
I ended up with a nasty sloppy mess with sausages swimming in it. After showing it to Chris and discussing the possible reasons it became clear that I had neglected the egg. I would like to point out at this juncture that his instructions never mention using the egg and I followed them to the letter. So we’re now starting again with the correct batter. It made us laugh so I thought I’d share it.
