V for Vendetta
Rob and I went to see this tonight and it was amazing. One of the best films I’ve seen in a long time however sadly a large proportion of the audience seemed to entirely miss the point. As we were leaving I heard the comments “I don’t care what he stands for I wanted to see his face!” and “Why can’t ‘e jus’ talk’n english?”.
One of my favourite moments was at the beginning when V introduces himself to Evey thus:
“Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate.
This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is it vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished, as the once vital voice of the verisimilitude now venerates what they once vilified. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified, and has vowed to vangquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition.
The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose vis-à-vis an introduction, and so it is my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.”
The film is not so verbose throughout but if that puts you off then it may not be for you. The story is interesting and thought provoking although it moves at a fairly slow pace. I was surprised considering the film was directed by the Wachowski Brothers that it does not suffer from the overused and poor CGI that ruined the Matrix sequels. For a comic book adaptation I was also surprised by the lack of action, in a fight scene and explosions sense, and refreshed to see that it was not required as the story was mostly spoken, with the occasional well executed fight scene.
Definitely recommended and I’ll be buying the comic book tomorrow.
