Goddamn Global Warming

So I went to Katy’s as planned after leaving Apple on Sunday afternoon. I managed to do the journey in about three and a quarter hours which included stopping to buy two litres of water and a can of Red Bull for the journey. On Monday night Katy, her housmate, Chris, his girlfriend, Danni and I went to the Talbot in Wrexham to see Ginger (from the Wildhearts) doing an acoustic set. Fittingly billed as “Ginger - Acoustic as F**k” to say it was an amazing gig would be an understatement.

The Wildhearts are one of Katy’s favourite band, what I’ve heard of their’s I like but I’m not as big a fan as her, Chris isn’t all that keen and I don’t think Danni had heard of them but we all had a great night. They were supported by Jackdaw 4 (as an acoustic two-piece) who were so good I bought their album, Willie Dowling, the singer, was incredibly entertaining and had the audience in stitches with a ridiculous joke about sponges that I will remember for the rest of my life.

Then Ginger came on. His set started with the audience chanting for Steve, his second guitarist, to down a bottle of beer, which he did, then Ginger announced to the audience with a chuckle, “As you can see this is going to be a very professional evening”. I have never been to a gig with such a good atmosphere in my life. The Talbot is a small venue, underground, with a low ceiling and not a large floor-space. I’d guess there were about fifty people there. Between songs Ginger joked with the audience and told stories about previous gigs. In one break someone shouted out “You Beautiful Thing You”, Ginger said, “Ok, you paid for the tickets”, then said, “How does that go again?”. The audience then hummed the song at him until he started playing it then everyone sang along. I know this is long and rambling but it was such a good atmosphere, no moshing, no pushing just people enjoying music and a Musician who was genuinely glad we’d made an effort to come and see him.

The rest of the week was fairly chilled, we went to meet a friend of Katy’s in Wem on Wednesday and give her the CD she had got signed for her by Ginger. The remainder was spent avoiding the heat reading, eating lots of ice cream and watching films.

Lastly, it was my birthday today, I’m 22, I got two Cure DVDs and a Smashing Pumpkins DVD from Katy which was cool. Thank you to everyone who sent me text messages today and thanks for all the cards. It’s time for bed now as it’s more Apple training tomorrow.
