£10k Beastie
I just read about Apple releasing their updated G5s so I thought I’d have a look. I got a bit carried away and decided to max out all the options for the dual processor 2.5Ghz G5.
For a Dual Processor 2.5Ghz G5, with liquid cooling, 8Gb RAM, Two 250Gb HDDs, Superdrive, ATI Radeon 9800 XT 256MB, Bluetooth, Airport Extreme, Apple Keyboard, Apple Mouse, OSX, Two 23″ Cinema displays, an iSight and Applecare the bill is £8,105,52 when you add VAT that gets you to £9,523.99.
Whew, that’s a lot of money.
[EDIT] I should just draw attention to the fact that the 9.5K includes TWO 23″ LCD Displays which cost £1,599 each.[/EDIT]

8GB RAM?! If you ever needed that much power… I’d say that is a fair deal, but still that’s a lotta lotta money.

“8GB RAM?!” Give it five years and that will probably be standard.

Then I look forwards to you five years… that is still a whole lot of RAM! The things I could do with that… why I could listen to really high bit video whilst disecting something on Premier, with about seven thousand Photoshop images open. I’ve always wanted to do that.
Do you see the next-gen consoles being able to compete with PCs with specs? Obviously not over a period of time, but when they are released do you think they will be comparable to reasonably high-spec PCs?

Only for gaming. I can’t see them being used for other uses like word processing and image manipulation. I can see that the next step will be combining the media PC stuff with consoles like the PSX and the CD features on the X-Box. The PSP will be interesting, I’m waiting to see how it will interact with the PS2, PSX and PS3. The video features will be cool too.

Hmmm I dunno, M$ are talking about releasing a second version of the xbox which is running windows and can be used as a cheap yet pretty damn powerful home PC…
