More First-Class Shenanigans

On the way home from London on monday night the driver came over the tannoy to tell us that he had declassified the first-class section as the train was busy. Although upon arriving at Bromley South passengers sitting in the first class section without valid tickets should move, pay the upgrade or be prepared to pay the fine. This seems a strange course of action to me.

Lets look at this. Why would someone buy a first-class ticket? People buy them so they are guaranteed a seat in a generally less crowded section of the train. If someone with a first-class ticket had got on that train they may well have found themselves without a seat, so would they buy one again? Obviously the majority of passengers have standard tickets so why bother having a first class section for a small minority, which for the most part, as mentioned here, is just wasted space?
