A real live bandit

Yesterdays lecture was fantastic. I was in two minds as to whether I should bother coming in or not as it’s only one hour and I have plenty of work to do. It turned out to be well worthwhile as we had a guest lecturer, Aleks Krotoski (who used to present Thumb Bandits and Bits) came in to talk about Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG’s). She’s currently studying for a Phd in something to do with sociology and online gaming at Surrey (My brother’s old uni). So she talked about online gaming, why it worked, how it worked and it’s effects on the participants. As she said herself it was nice to hear someone citing the positive effects of videogames for a change.

She touched on things like Everquest being the 77th Richest Country and the sale of virtual goods for real money. It was a really interesting lecture and even the people not that interested in gaming seemed to enjoy it.

Edit: Gold anyone?
