PS2 Vs Xbox the rematch

My post about PS2 Online seems to have sparked some life into the xbox vs PS2 debate. Dean has made some strong arguments for the xbox as it has a HDD and decent online options. However Xbox Live has a subscription fee and I already have a fair sized collection of PS2 games. I’m not really interested in getting an Xbox but the arguments are tempting. I still think I’d rather wait for the PS3 and in the meantime if Sony get their finger out and release the HDD in Europe I’ll probably get that.

Hopefully the PS3 will correct the current flaws in the PS2 by providing a HDD to store saved games, eliminating expensive and under specced memory cards. It would also be nice if it included a decent firmware that provided a web browser and email app. The current browser is terrible and can only access the PS2 Online site.

At the end of the day it’s all about cost, the only reason I can afford a PS2 and an XBOX is because I get discounts on software at work (the actual cost of both consoles is fairly cheap) I therefore agree with Ian, if you have a fair sized collection of games then stick with what you’ve got - don’t get me wrong my PS2 is great for single player games but my XBOX rocks online. This could almost be a debate over MAC vs PC, Merc vs Porsche et-al, hey does it really matter?

With regards to the PS3, after this current format war I may find myself getting XBOX 2 first as it is more likely to be a strict games machine, I can see the PS3 evolving into some sort of multimedia set top box rather than a strict console, like the PSX and this doesn’t appeal to my tastes.
