The PC is dead. Long live the.. no it’s dead.
After I finally got everything working the PC downstairs is now fubar. The drive died and I have had to order another one. Last night Chris and Tony came over to help me recover the data off the dead disk. We spent a while trying to figure a way of getting the data off. The PC can only boot into dos, dos does not have pkzip installed, the machine does not have a CD Writer, it does have both a wired and a wireless network connection but they are unsuported in dos. How do you get about 30Mb of data off of it?
We downloaded a disk image of a floppy boot disk with network support on it, burnt it to a CD (1.4Mb on a 700Mb medium, oh the shame) as I don’t have a floppy drive on either mac. Tried to boot up the PC from the CD and then found that it couldn’t read the disc. Then while we were sitting around waiting for Knoppix to download, I suddenly thought out loud “can’t I just copy the files to the new harddisk when I get it?”. D’oh! It suddenly seemed incredibly obvious that this was the answer so we headed off to the pub.
