I’m such a wuss!
Well I finally got to play PS2 today. I played Project Zero for about two and a half hours alone in the house and it completely freaked me out. It’s a Japanese horror game set in an abandoned house which is avoided by the local villagers. There are stories of strange rituals taking place there and everyone who has lived there has disappeared in mysterious circumstances. That’s all pretty standard stuff but the game is different from the traditional survival horror games in that you are unarmed.
The game is presented in a scratchy cinematic style. It makes good use of flashbacks and seamlessly integrates cut-scenes within the flow of the game. You carry a special camera with which you can take photos of the various ghosts that attack you, as you photograph them the camera absorbs there “mystic energy” and eventually they disappear. The best thing about the game though is the atmosphere, it’s so intense. You walk along a corridor and the controller starts pulsating with a heartbeat and then a ghost screams past before disappearing through the wall. It is the scariest game I have ever played.
