I have to write an essay about one of the following:
“Analyse
the functions of the poster in relation to the emergence of modernism in the
visual arts with particular reference to the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
You should relate your answer to the historical conditions in which posters were
produced, circulated, and received by contemporary
audiences.”
“To what extent did the Private Press movement
influence progressive trends in graphic design?”
“Art Nouveau
derived from a wide range of sources. To what extent was it a decorative style
with its roots in the past? How far was it a modernist style? Please use
examples from the graphic arts in your essay.”
“Analyse the
relationships between modern art and graphic design. Do progressive forms in
graphic design (in the early 20th century) derive from modern art, or is the
relationship more complex?”
“Are there any advantages in
studying graphic forms as ’sign systems’? To what extent is semiology an
effective methodology for detecting social and cultural meanings in poster ads
or other visual forms? Apply the method to one or more images relevant to this
module”
I know, I’m spoilt for choice! I just can’t decide which
one is going to be the least dull!
